Another tragedy about to take place for the lost and abandoned animals of Lawrence county. Commissioner Bobbie Birch announces in the paper today he is going to put up a DROP OFF BIN for people to dump sick animals, puppies, dogs, cats, etc. due to him not wanting to pay someone to take care of these animals that are temporarily imprisoned inside this filthy, scary holding facility that he has concocted where he can keep animals until they are killed by Dr. Lee one by one while the other animals are forced to watch.

<div style="background-color: #fbfbfb; box-sizing: border-box; color: #464646; font-family: "Source Sans Pro", "Trebuchet MS", sans-serif; font-size: 15px; margin-bottom: 10.5px; word-wrap: break-word;">

<div style="background-color: #fbfbfb; box-sizing: border-box; color: #464646; font-family: "Source Sans Pro", "Trebuchet MS", sans-serif; font-size: 15px; margin-bottom: 10.5px; word-wrap: break-word;">
Birch's setup does not allow families that are searching for their lost pets to come to this facility because their pet most likely were already killed anyway, nor have they taken the time to even help with showing a list of the beautiful deserving animals that are available for adoption. Dogs that do not get along with other dogs can easily kill other animals there, or dogs who do not like cats etc.

<div style="background-color: #fbfbfb; box-sizing: border-box; color: #464646; font-family: "Source Sans Pro", "Trebuchet MS", sans-serif; font-size: 15px; margin-bottom: 10.5px; word-wrap: break-word;">

<div style="background-color: #fbfbfb; box-sizing: border-box; color: #464646; font-family: "Source Sans Pro", "Trebuchet MS", sans-serif; font-size: 15px; margin-bottom: 10.5px; word-wrap: break-word;">
His animal control person Kim Carpenter went on a vacations last week and no arrangements were made to feed, water or clean up after the animals. Another point to mention is that she has never documented any animals upon intake for this temporary facility which is against the rules. This has been a tragedy from the moment Birch and the police chief McWorter decided to shut down the pro life shelter and did so with no warrant! And with their campaign of lies they saturated the local news outlets and television stations who bought into this garbage of lies. Sadly the pro life shelter was the only safe place for the animals and was about to move into a new building.

<div style="background-color: #fbfbfb; box-sizing: border-box; color: #464646; font-family: "Source Sans Pro", "Trebuchet MS", sans-serif; font-size: 15px; margin-bottom: 10.5px; word-wrap: break-word;">

<div style="background-color: #fbfbfb; box-sizing: border-box; color: #464646; font-family: "Source Sans Pro", "Trebuchet MS", sans-serif; font-size: 15px; margin-bottom: 10.5px; word-wrap: break-word;">
The truth will come out but right now this cruel idea of people dumping scared and sick animals in a bin together for convenience cannot happen and others are trying to do something about it. Bobbie Birch is a dangerous and cruel person. He definitely needs to be investigated and prosecuted. He is not a certified animal control person for one and he is killing animals! That should be a crime right there! Birch set Ms.Taylor up with his vicious campaign of lies with the help of a woman named Cheryl Jones, and it is the one and only reason thousands of animals have been killed.

<div style="background-color: #fbfbfb; box-sizing: border-box; color: #464646; font-family: "Source Sans Pro", "Trebuchet MS", sans-serif; font-size: 15px; margin-bottom: 10.5px; word-wrap: break-word;">

<div style="background-color: #fbfbfb; box-sizing: border-box; color: #464646; font-family: "Source Sans Pro", "Trebuchet MS", sans-serif; font-size: 15px; margin-bottom: 10.5px; word-wrap: break-word;">
The suffering Birch and his cronies have caused is a horror story in itself. For us who know the truth this has been heart wrenching and tragic. Every bit of what I said here is the painful truth. Sorry for the long communication but the animals need those who really do care about their lives and who want them to live happy lives and truly know what is like to be loved. Thank you for caring about the welfare of animals.

A cutting wind whipped around the corner of the house, hitting Stan and Ollie as they lay huddled together by a dog house they had both become too large to use. Chains prevented either animal from seeking shelter elsewhere in the frigid weather. Inside Paulie was also cold. He pulled the dirty blanket up around his neck and whimpered from the pain of his last beating.

On the lonely road that barely reached the ramshackle home Paulie’s parents shared with another family, the sound of traffic was almost non-existent. Stan and Ollie sat up when they heard the motors of the two vehicles. A man parked his truck beside the house and began to take photographs of the two chained dogs. The second vehicle pulled up beside the truck and a woman exited holding a brief case. She began to knock at the front door, then the back. Finally the second door cracked, and the woman gained entrance.

After two hours, both officials were back on the road. The animal control officer drove directly to the courthouse where he consulted with the district attorney’s office. The DHR worker drove to a home miles away from Paulie’s and left the emaciated and abused boy with an older couple.

Paulie reveled in the warmth of his foster home, while Stan and Ollie shivered as the temperature reached three degrees that night…and the next…and the next after that. When the animal control officer returned eight days later, Stan lay still beside the wooden dog house. He no longer suffered from the unrelenting wind and cold. The officer took Ollie away in his truck and left him at a veterinarian’s; the large Dobie mix had the first real meal he’d had in months.

Ollie began to leave his fragile shell as his ribs disappeared one by one. Finally, adoption! He had a home and a family and toys and more joy than his wagging stump of a tail could express. Miles away, Paulie was shuttled to still another foster home. He placed his hurt feelings in a small compartment of his heart and left them there.

Two years passed, and Ollie had all but forgotten the abuse he once endured. The thunder outside reminded him of the beatings of his past life, but he knew his was safe…until he heard the lightning hit the roof over his warm home. Then there was smoke.

When the fire brigade arrived, they found Ollie’s owner lying on the ground outside the home that was now engulfed in flames. The large dog stood over him, gently nudging the man into consciousness. When awake, Ollie’s owner told how the dog had dragged him from his bed to the safety of the carport as flames flickered down the walls and smoke filled his lungs. The local paper took pictures of Ollie and called him a hero. Ollie wasn’t sure what the fuss was about. All he had done was save the man who had saved him. No real dog would have done less.

Across the county, Paulie lay in bed listening to the thunder and wishing he was dead. Tomorrow he would go to still another foster home to be abused by new “parents.” He refused to cry.

At the age of 15, Paulie found an open gun safe in the home of his latest foster family. They were nice enough to him, but he knew what he had to do. He’d known for a long time.

Paulie entered the campus on a Sunday night and crawled through a large air vent. From there, he could reach the whole school on Monday. He would show them; they would be sitting ducks.

The death count was horrendous. Everyone asked how did it happen in Lauderdale County? The entire state mourned.

The moral? No one can predict whose life will mean something. That life county officials don’t care about often means more than the so-called higher species they seem to value so much more.

Isn’t it time our elected officials acknowledged that?

<span style="font-family: "trebuchet ms" , sans-serif; font-size: large;">Just as new phrases appear almost daily, so do old terms fall by the wayside. While looking for a photo of a certain feline coat pattern, we realized there wasn't a single instance of the the term "poached egg tabby" to be found on the Internet.
<span style="font-family: "trebuchet ms" , sans-serif; font-size: large;">

<span style="font-family: "trebuchet ms" , sans-serif; font-size: large;">Perhaps the term was regional, but it once regularly appeared in magazines for cat fanciers. Can you deduce its reference? This is a poached egg:
<span style="font-family: "trebuchet ms" , sans-serif; font-size: large;">

<span style="font-family: "trebuchet ms" , sans-serif; font-size: large;">This is a poached egg tabby:
<span style="font-family: "trebuchet ms" , sans-serif; font-size: large;">

<span style="font-family: "trebuchet ms" , sans-serif; font-size: large;">Can you see the resemblance? Today it seems that most denote this particular tabby pattern as simply "classic." That may be fine for a 1965 Mustang, but a cat is so much more.
<span style="font-family: "trebuchet ms" , sans-serif; font-size: large;">

The Gilbert Animal Hospital on East Tennessee Street in Florence has a new owner. When contacted, a spokesperson for the veterinary practice said that Dr. Sheila Gilbert had been commuting between Florence and Houston, Texas, where her husband had been transferred, for two years. She is now moving permanently to Houston, and her practice has been purchased by a new veterinarian.

Dr. Gilbert was known for her caring and generosity during her stay in Florence. She personally neutered at least one cat colony at her own expense, for which this writer is eternally grateful.

Unfortunately, the new owner will not be retaining long-time employee Mr. Willie, who quite possibly still bears scars from one red tabby named Tucker. While we obviously feel this is a bad business move, we believe Mr. Willie has much to offer other medical practices. If you have any information concerning employment for Mr. Willie, you may leave a message in care of the Gilbert Clinic at 256-767-0500.

When a small dog appeared in the North
Florence community of Seven Points, those who saw her were shocked.
The white and tan terrier was sporting a tumor the size of a bowling
ball on her right side. It was fairly easy to take possession of the
hungry dog who wore no collar, but once at the Florence, Alabama,
animal shelter there was some doubt that the plucky little girl could
be saved.

A visit to a local veterinarian offered
no hope; the tumor was connected to various nerves and blood vessels
and was considered inoperable. Debbie Rappuhn, director of Heart of
Alabama Save Rescue Adopt, refused to give up and took the dog now
named “Pretty Girl” to a second veterinarian who agreed to
perform the sensitive surgery.

Pretty Girl underwent the operation on
November 22, 2013, coming through the ordeal weak but otherwise

recover in the impersonal shelter and sought a foster home for their
patient. Pretty Girl went to live with Kim Ferguson.

A TNR Colony Member Displaying Its Clipped Left Ear

Mr. Tommy Morson was quoted in today's TimesDaily concerning TNR programs. Just what is TNR? The initials stand for Trap-Neuter-Return, the "R" sometimes standing for release. Is there a difference? Very little. The neutered cats are almost always returned to the location of their capture. They are only relocated in a new area if their previous territory is no longer habitable for some reason.

Do such programs work? You Betcha! They decrease breeding, disease, fatalities, and the influx of new feral cats. Are there drawbacks? The only opposition to TNR programs come from the "birder" crowd. Do these cats ever kill birds? Unfortunately, the answer is yes, but...

A mother cat is twice as likely to kill prey as a spayed female. So what does the opposition want? Apparently they want all feral cats rounded up and euthanized. I assume you, the readers of this blog, don't want that or you wouldn't be reading to start with.

So what about what Mr. Morson said? Unfortunately, he mentioned the possibility of such cats starving. No cats are released to be totally on their own. Each colony has at least one person who regularly supplies food and water. I am the "mother" to one such colony, feeding seven to nine cats every day. All these cats have come from one grand dam, Callie, who has yet to be trapped, but keep your fingers crossed and say a prayer.

What can you do to help? Please contact PAWS concerning a donation to their TNR program. Also, watch for a new program that will help with transportation costs to locate cats to the Northeast where there is a waiting list.

As I left work this morning, I traveled north on Hwy. 43. Between Lawrence Street and the edge of the business district of Russellville I saw two dead dogs...dogs that weren't there Saturday morning. The smaller one appeared to be a terrier with a red collar; I was unable to tell if the larger dog wore one. Nevertheless, someone loved at least one of the dogs...and now this former family member is dead.

Did you not love it enough to keep in your back yard? Did you just forget to close the gate? Or are you like the current Russellville mayor Troy Oliver and think no leash law is needed or wanted in your fair city?

Citizens of Russellville, I don't like to drive home with tears in my eyes because you let an innocent animal die in pain on a hot asphalt highway. Wake up! I can't vote in your town even though I often work there. You're the ones who can make a difference. Call your council member--go to the next meeting--demand a leash law.

If you treat your animals this way, I have very few hopes that you treat your human children any better...
Many thanks to Dr. Joe Cobb of the Colbert Animal Clinic for taking such good care of Crockett.

Maisie, that wonderful and spirited beagle, is still residing at Dr. Cobb's office in Tuscumbia. Dr. Cobb thought it best for her to spend the winter at the clinic in order for him to keep a close check on her injuries. At least that was his story--we think he just hates to see her leave.

Happily, Maisie has finally been given a clean bill of health and is ready to go to her forever home, wherever that may be. She will need an inside home with no young children. If you or someone you know can provide that home, please contact Dr. Cobb's office at 256-381-6210.

If you would like to contribute to Dr. Cobb's ongoing efforts to help and place injured animals, you may send your donations to Maisie's Fund in care of :

Colbert Animal Clinic
930 Hwy 20
Tuscumbia, AL 35674-6092

Many thanks to all who have supported Crockett and Maisie with both monetary donations and prayers.Unknownnoreply@blogger.com1tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-3365939323318189766.post-10345940157675364722011-04-11T17:00:00.000-07:002011-04-12T01:38:19.036-07:00Cisco--Whata Kid!
This is Cisco, a small terrier/bull dog mix. Dogs do not. This weekend I lost a good friend of five years standing. He was in the palm of a friend's hand when I first met him, his face still black and his fangs bared at all of five weeks old. They named him Daytona; I called him Talbot for the werewolf he resembled.

Talbot died Saturday at the age of barely five years--much too soon for a Yorkie. He had visited with me as usual on Thursday night, putting his head on my chair and sighing until I picked him up. Saturday was a hectic day and the unneutered Talbot was in a playful mood, so playful that his mother put him on the front porch away from the unspayed miniature Yorkie inside.

He died there on the porch, or more correctly hanging from his leash over the edge of the elevated decking. His mother found him three hours later when she remembered to check on him. He was cold and stiff. They all cried, and so did I.

No dog deserves to die that way. Please neuter your pets...and please give them a long leash. Their lives depend on it.Unknownnoreply@blogger.com1tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-3365939323318189766.post-42241754930754186232011-02-06T08:18:00.000-08:002011-02-06T08:21:37.694-08:00Maisie's Corner/Crockett UpdateThe Connection now has Maisie's Corner up and running. She has sent word on her condition via the good doctor:

I would like to update everyone on Maisie the wonder beagle. The pin is out of her leg and we recently spayed her. She is doing well, she still has trouble with her leg but I believe that will get better. The important thing is that she is alive and well and, as the old saying goes, full of piss and vinegar. Trader came by to see her not long ago and was thrilled. She is an inspiration to everyone she meets. To all of you who donated let me say thanks on behalf of Maisie and the staff here at Colbert Animal Clinic. All the donations were used exclusively for Maisie. I read a great quote the other day that fits occasions like this,"The fact that you can only do a little is no excuse for doing nothing". B.'s Corner:

Hi, my name is Sampson. I live out in the county and sometimes I like to roam to see the neighborhood. I like to visit with my friends around our little community. I am a rescue dog also. I came to my owner with a broken jaw a couple of years ago and she was nice enough to have me fixed up and let me stay.

This past weekend while exploring, someone shot me. Four times with a 22 caliber rifle. I don't know why they did this. Maybe they thought I was a coyote. But the vet said I was shot and I needed surgery. I've been staying with the vet until I am able to eat something. Cat food is kinda bland. I really don't know how they eat that stuff. But right now my regular food isn't all that inviting either.

So I am asking for your help today. We've hit $500.00 for Maisie's surgery and recuperation. Unfortunately, Maisie will be staying with Dr. Cobb for about five more weeks, so we don't know what the final bill will be. Dr. Cobb is offering many of his services free, and we owe him a tremendous thanks.

Last week we were also asked to help Zeus, a cat that was believed to have been seriously injured in a Florence house fire. Thankfully, Zeus was only singed, sooty, and scared--not a great combination, but not life threatening either.

However, Dr. Cobb was on standby for the cat should he have needed actual medical attention. It's not a rare thing for the small animals who make up part of our families to need emergency attention. We firmly believe that families who adopt animals should be responsible for their basic medical needs, but none of us can predict an emergency brought about by freak accident--or finding a homeless animal like Maisie who would die by the side of the road without help from her human friends.

Therefore, we are establishing Maisie's Fund, a permanent fund that will reside in an open account at Dr. Cobb's Colbert Animal Clinic. We'll be providing more details on how to give as we provide the final update on Maisie's health and her placement in a forever, indoor home.

Trader will also be contacting each of you who've given so generously with more details on the end of Maisie's wonderful story of recovery. Did I say end? I meant beginning...Unknownnoreply@blogger.com0
